Marijuana (марихуана) — нейтральна, найпоширеніша назва висушених квіток і листя рослини канабіс, які курять або використовують в інших формах. У медицині та законодавстві сьогодні дедалі частіше вживають слово cannabis (канабіс), а не marijuana.

Pot — розмовний сленг. Це просто неформальна назва марихуани. Приклади:

Reefer  — теж сленг, але більш старомодний. Історично це слово часто означало самокрутку з марихуаною (joint), хоча іноді ним називали і саму марихуану. Сьогодні його можна почути в старих фільмах, піснях або книгах, але в повсякденній мові воно зустрічається значно рідше.

Якщо дивитися на частоту вживання сьогодні:

1. cannabis — офіційно, медично, юридично.
2. marijuana — загальновживано, хоча поступово трохи витісняється словом cannabis.
3. weed — найпоширеніший сучасний сленг.
4. pot — теж дуже поширений, але трохи менш модний, ніж weed.
5. reefer — переважно старомодне або стилістичне слово.

Тож якщо у фільмі хтось каже:

• Do you smoke weed? — «Ти куриш траву?»
• Do you smoke pot? — те саме, тільки іншим сленговим словом.
• He's smoking a reefer. — «Він курить косяк (самокрутку з марихуаною).»

В американських серіалах чи фільмах найчастіше зараз почуєте саме weed.
